How to Treat Anxiety Holistically?

A holistic and integrative approach to anxiety means not just thinking about symptoms but rather looking at their context and personalizing a treatment approach.
Conventional psychiatry approaches most mental health problems with three solutions – medications, therapy or (…drumroll…) medications plus therapy. And while extensive psychiatric research and my own personal experience as a conventionally trained psychiatrist have shown me that these can be very effective solutions…should they be our only solutions? And shouldn’t we be discussing the risks compared to benefits of this conventional approach both in the short term and long term?
Here is where an integrative and holistic approach to anxiety is key. Yes, medications and therapy are important options, but they aren’t the only options. Let’s look at interventions like botanicals, supplements, sleep optimization, diet, movement/exercise, your support system/community, spirituality, advanced laboratory testing, health technology, thought and relationship patterns, alternative medicine and the list goes on.
Anxiety can be an incredibly debilitating, overwhelming and complex struggle. From physical symptoms like muscle tension, headaches, stomach upset, palpitations to mental restlessness, racing worried thoughts, irritability and trouble with sleep, there is almost no facet of your life that it doesn’t touch.
