Treating Postpartum Depression with Zulresso/Brexanolone or Zurvuzae/Zuranolone

Finally, an FDA approved medication for depression that you only need to take for a short period of time. Finally, this medication is FDA approved to take by mouth at home.

Brexanolon/Zulresso (IV form) or Zuranolone/Zurvuzae (oral form) are some of the newest medication treatment options for postpartum depression. I’ve had patients respond to them with anywhere from moderate to really impressive, life-altering change.  And I think most significantly, these effects are usually seen within days to weeks – rapid improvement at a critical and vulnerable time.

Let’s learn more: The medication (in either form) is a synthetic version of the hormone allopregnanolone, which is a derivative of the hormone progesterone. It works by modulating gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a role in regulating mood. It is theorized that the rapid fluctuations in hormone levels that occur during pregnancy and childbirth may contribute to the development of postpartum depression in susceptible individuals. Therefore the theory goes, having a hormonally oriented medication like this may directly address a root cause of depression specifically in the postpartum period.

To be clear, this medication isn’t a cure-all for postpartum depression. It has its risks like any other medication, supplement or botanical and it isn’t for everyone. I’m a firm believer that medication alone in the majority of cases isn’t sufficient to create lasting and meaningful mental health change.

That being said, this medication option is always something I consider in my integrative approach to postpartum depression. A cornerstone of my treatment philosophy is that we have options – newer medications, tried and true medications, supplements, lifestyle changes, therapy, the list goes on. I work with my postpartum patients to figure out what treatment strategy best aligns with their values, goals and situation.
